Apparently the toads didn't spontaneously explode. Rather, resident crows pecked holes in their body cavities in an attempt to eat their livers. When these punctured individuals swelled defensively in subsequent encounters with crows, their intestines were squirted out of their body cavities. Thus, the post mortem impression that they had "exploded"
